Holiday cooking fats are hazardous to your pipes
Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) are a leading cause of sewer spills. Cooking grease coats your pipes and sewer lines, and eventually causes a complete blockage. Pouring hot water and detergent down the drain only temporarily breaks up grease.
By following a few simple steps, you can help prevent sewer spills.
Pour: small amounts of cooled cooking oil and grease into a disposable container (can, milk or juice carton, or jar) and put in the trash.
Scrape: meat scraps and food trimmings into the trash. The garbage disposal is not a trash can.
Wipe: dishes and pots coated with grease should be wiped clean with paper towels prior to being thrown away. Then dispose of the paper towels in the trash.
Large amounts of used cooking oil, like from turkey deep fryers, should be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility. For more information, go to http://lessismore.org/materials/52-cooking-oil/
